Where's the water to grow biofuels?
The fact is that there is now almost equal global concern over water as there is over energy. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has just completed a five-year study of the global water scenario. According to the study, both India and China are in the danger zone when it comes to water; they are using 60 per cent of their entire potential usable water for human purposes. Read More

Dealing with the challenge before us
World population is expected to reach about eight billion by 2025, meaning about another two billion mouths to feed. In the same period, we expect climate change to begin to bite in its impact on water supplies in many areas and oil production to potentially peak and start to decline, while growing cities need ever increasing water supplies. Dr Colin Chartres, chief science adviser with the National Water Commission, has been appointed director-general of the International Water Management Institute, based in Sri Lanka. Read More

Depleting water level a big problem
“As the water tables fall, well drillers are using modified oil-drilling technology to reach water, going as deep as 1,000 metres in some locations. In communities where underground water sources have dried up entirely, all agriculture is rain-fed and drinking water is trucked in,” Tushaar Shah, who heads the International Water Management Institute’s groundwater station in Gujarat.
