Global
Dialogue on Water, Food and Environment
IWMI is a founding member and a catalyst behind the creation of the Dialogue
on Water, Food and Environment - a new international initiative to bring
together the agricultural and environmental communities.
The aim of the Dialogue is to work towards a knowledge-based consensus
between these communities on the present and future needs of water for
food production, livelihoods, health and nature in developing countries.
The Dialogue is a policy-level initiative whose objective is to provide
knowledge to policymakers to help them make informed decisions that allow
national and household food security, and equitable water use in agriculture
and nature.
Comprehensive
Assessment of Water in Agriculture
IWMI is leading one
of the Dialogue's Knowledge Base components which feeds new knowledge
into policy discussions. This is the Comprehensive Assessment of Water
in Agriculture: Costs, Benefits and Future Directions, which focuses on
water use, agriculture and environmental/ecosystem management.
This assessment will look at the global situation of water management
for agriculture since 1950 to the present. It will also conduct studies
in a number of ecosystems where there is likely to be competition between
the need to expand food production and maintain local wetlands and other
natural systems.
SIMA:
Finding the links between agriculture and malaria
IWMI is leading the
CGIAR Systemwide Initiative on Malaria and Agriculture (SIMA). This research
initiative will bring together the agricultural research community, malaria
programs, NGOs and governments in Africa, to study water and land use
practices across a range of crops and ecosystems. By better understanding
this situation SIMA research will propose new ways to reduce malaria in
high-risk areas.
