About Sri Lanka- IWMI’s Host Country
For regional and international staff working at Headquarters, Sri Lanka is a veritable paradise. The island is approximately 65,610 sq. km. and lies in the Indian Ocean, off the south western tip of India. Sri Lanka takes pride in its cultural heritage of 2,500 years, seen in ancient dagobas, rock fortresses and irrigation systems. The diversity of landscape in so small a land is amazing.

From sunny, palm- fringed beaches, bays and lagoons on the coast, to mist- topped mountains and fragrant tea gardens in the central highlands, the views are spectacular. You can swim, surf or go snorkeling, hike through wilderness trails and rainforests, or go river rafting. The climate varies according to the elevation above sea level.

In Colombo, average temperatures are between 25°C to 28°C while in the hill country it varies from 14°C to 16° C. Colombo, the commercial capital is a mix of old and new with modern shopping plazas towering beside eastern bazaars, supermarkets, restaurants and hotels ranging from modest guest houses to five- star complexes. While Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages, English is also spoken by many Sri Lankans.

The beaches are the best. Go for sun, sand, sea… and a good tan
