| Introduction
The Research Portfolio Map is an attempt to provide a tool for better communicating the locations of IWMI's offices and research projects to both external and internal audiences. It addresses a need for an efficient way to translate basic project data currently spread between multiple project work-plans and databases into a visual portfolio overview capable of effectively communicating IWMI's work geographically and thematically.
The primary information provided by this map is:
- Location of IWMI offices
- Countries in which IWMI has projects (the maps do not show the exact location of a project in a country)
- Theme wise listing of Countries in which IWMI has projects
- Country wise listing of main projects
- Summary information on each main project per country (where this is available in E-Project File)
- Summary information on each sub-project per country (where this is available in E-Project File)
The maps are currently accessible from the Intranet and will also be made available through the Internet following this review. The data is automatically pulled from the E-Project File so that any updates of project information carried out through E-project file will be automatically reflected in the portfolio map.
IWMI Research Portfolio Map consists of two maps
- IWMI Offices
- Ongoing Researches
How the map works
Map of IWMI Offices:
The various types of IWMI offices are marked on a world map using symbols linked to key to differentiate the various offices. This is used as the base map to show IWMI project locations.
Map of Ongoing Research:
Counties in which IWMI has projects are shaded, and moving the cursor towards any shaded country will prompt the country name to be displayed. Clicking a shaded country will prompt a list of (main) projects that have components (sub-projects) in that country. Selection of a main project will prompt an information box containing details of that (main) project. Any sub-projects belonging to each selected main project will be listed at the bottom of this box, and those which work in the country concerned will have activated links which, when clicked, display summary details of the sub-project.
Geographical coverage of projects can also be viewed on a thematic basis by using the tick boxes provided on the map’s legend. To see projects belonging to a specific theme, as assigned in the Project Code Book, de-select the other theme boxes.
